Stonehenge, Avebury, Lacock and Salisbury Cathedral |
Stonehenge (12 mi)
is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire,
about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13 kilometres (8.1
mi) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world,
Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of
large standing stones and sits at the centre of the densest complex of
Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred
burial mounds.
Avebury (10 mi)Without
doubt, Avebury is the most impressive of all remaining pre-historic
earthworks in Europe. While Stonehenge was dedicated to the worship of
the sun and moon, Avebury seems to have been dedicated to more human
themes. The strong sexual symbolism, in evidence in the way the
triangular and columnar stones were paired together, in conjunction with
the elaborate funeral celebrations, show that the cycle of birth,
life and death was very important in Neolithic times.
Lacock (9 mi)
The
Wiltshire village of Lacock, with its cottages and inns dating back to
the 15th century form a breathtaking backdrop to the BBC production of
Cranford. The village is much admired by film makers; the National trust
village has played host to a variety of classic films from Pride and
Prejudice to Harry Potter.
Salisbury Cathedral - (25 mi)
One
of the finest medieval Cathedrals in Britain with Britain's tallest
spire - which visitors are invited to climb. For over 750 years pilgrims
have gone to Salisbury to seek inspiration in the glory and peace of
the building, to marvel at the beauty and scale of the cathedral
interior and the surrounding Cathedral Close. Visitors can study the
original Magna Carta in the Chapter House.
